I think the reality is that the "culture wars" never ended. The election of Barrack Obama doesn't change the fact that the arts and artists will always be on the line for their social activism and ability to reach the public. First the Hollywood "elite" aren't suppose to be smart enough for anyone to really listen to and now America's artists aren't allowed to be part of a "call to service and volunteerism" for America? There is no winning here without a hard line that artists are independent voices, voters and taxpayers who have a right to involvement in the democratic process as much as corporations, forprofits and nonprofits (left and right) who all have a voice and equal opportunity to participate. Government agencies (like the NEA) have had relationships with constituents they fund and to whom they give subsidies since the beginning of our country...oil, agriculture, healthcare, education, commerce. Artists are no different. We have a right to be at the table, to voice our concerns and to be active in America's policies and government programs, funding or no funding. Every sector gets funding or subsidies from the government. Does that mean no one can participate in the process? I don't think so. Beck and his people would like to replace participation with fear. Artists won't let that happen...let's hope the NEA won't either.
