Specifically, we are moving from an old, mechanistic worldview that treats artistic creativity as an accessory to the important things of life…toward one that understands culture as the secret of survival, as the best way to cultivate imagination, empathy, and other life-skills essential to viable, humane community.”>>> [...]

Hi Arlene. Every time you write all I want to do is thank you! I always look forward to your next blog post and it is incredibly inspiring when sometimes the faith that others will someday see the value of art is hard to hang on to. I am deeply committed to the necessity for the arts for improving quality of life. Your gift of articulation and persistence touches me deeply, and I always pass on your blogs to whomever will listen!

Thanks for another great article, Arlene. I have been living with chronic rheumatoid arthritis since age 8. While western science has certainly helped me remain mobile and able to live a fulfilling life, it is art that has made my life fulfilling.
I am almost flabbergasted by the lengths to which scientists go to prove things that are intuitively known by people who practice an art: of course singing heals me! Any singer could tell you that!
The fact that many people need scientific "proof" of things that are so easily felt is a scary reminder of just how cut off from embodied experience we really are.
