A few days ago I alerted you to expect information about another great project by and for artists awakening to the crisis in democracy. SPARC, the Social and Public Art Resource Center in Venice, California, has inaugurated the National Call to Artists, a Web repository for images, songs, scripts, and ideas that can help increase awareness, freedom and justice in U.S. society. Recognizing that so much of our national debate is conducted in imagery, with tremendous effort expended to spin things toward the status quo, the call is going out to artists to take part in this discourse, using our expressive powers and social imagination to focus public attention on whatever must be put right and whatever suggests how that may be accomplished.
I?m delighted that I had a hand in conceptualizing this long overdue project. A key aim is to challenge and assist activists to make effective use of creative imagery, action, and imagination in mobilizing awareness and participation in social action. It?s easy to download artwork to the site, and activists are free to make use of it. Please share this information today!
