Reach and extend potential by aligning creativity
and purpose, pleasure and productivity.
In a culture of possibility, people create room in their work and lives for meaning and beauty. They allow themselves to improvise, accepting and even cherishing mistakes, because they know that new mistakes create new paths to success. They learn that work—whether the civic work of creating community or all the tasks that get jobs done—can feel like play. Opening the border between work and play allows them to renew organizations and communities from within.
It’s easy to succumb to the culture of disenchantment generated by the realm I call Datastan, in which so much of our imaginative and creative capacity is suppressed and machines are made the model for human beings. Increasingly, we know that the way we shape our stories shapes our lives and worlds. We need to get good at shaping stories, at bringing all we are—our bodies, emotions, intellects and spirits—to creating the narrative that carries the most power to inspire, the most beauty, meaning, and potential.
Learn to look at the world through a cultural lens, using the skills and approaches of artists to create a culture of possibility in your neighborhood, business, or nonprofit, and every individual can rise to the occasion. Expanded individual potential translates into collective potential in a cycle that dissolves old limits. New discoveries and new opportunities multiply.
