Two headlines this gray morning by the San Francisco Bay. The California Supreme Court invalidates the marriage licenses issued to gay couples in San Francisco, and the governor of New Jersey, flanked at the podium by his wife and his mother, steps down, confessing that he has been living a lie: he comes out as gay, resigning his office on account of extortion threats from a man with whom he had a relationship.
I am imagining the faces and feelings of my friends who were married during San Francisco’s brief venture into civic sanity. Here is what I am thinking: what can we do to save the soul of a society so gripped by fear and hatred of…what? Of such sins as war, persecution, and greed? No, gripped by fear and hatred of love.
